Campaign reaches critical halfway point to complete Phase I

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA — The “Spirit of Westfair” capital campaign volunteers are thrilled to announce two major milestones in their mission to revitalize the Westfair fairgrounds. The multi-million-dollar capital project recently received a transformative challenge grant from the Iowa West Foundation that will match donations dollar for dollar up to $2 million. Additionally, the campaign has officially surpassed the $5 million mark—reaching the critical halfway point of its Phase 1 fundraising goal of $10 million.
“Westfair renovations are important for fair families and fairgoers, and also for the community as the proposed top-notch facilities will serve the entire region,” said Brenda Mainwaring, President and CEO of the Iowa West Foundation. “The IWF initial investment of $2.5 million and subsequent matching grant seeks to ensure that future generations will be able to make Westfair memories of their own.”
This matching challenge provides a major incentive for the community: every dollar donated to the campaign between now and September 2026, will be matched 1:1 by the Iowa West Foundation up to $2 million. Whether a gift is $25 or $100,000, its impact is instantly doubled, providing a critical window in the coming months for donors to maximize their support for the future of Southwest Iowa agriculture and youth education.
“We are at a pivotal moment for Westfair,” said Connie Casson, Chair of the Friends of Westfair Committee. “As a kid, the time spent with family, friends, and neighbors made Westfair feel like more than an event; it was the highlight of the summer. As an adult, Westfair is still one of those places for me. It’s where I reconnect with an important part of me. The sights, the smells, the families, the friends—it’s a place I love, and a place where I see the future of our community taking shape.”
Westfair is known as a hub for connection, leadership, and belonging. As the campaign looks to expand programming, grow 4-H and FFA opportunities, and host more community-driven events, support for the capital campaign ensures the next generation can experience all that Westfair has to offer and more.
Adam Darrington, Chair of the Westfair Board, echoed the importance of this momentum:
“Hitting the halfway point is a milestone that reflects the belief so many have in the future of Westfair,” he said. “This progress isn’t just about dollars raised—it’s about a community coming together to invest in something that will serve generations to come. With this match, now is the time to give and see that investment doubled.”
The Impact of Phase I
The funds raised during this campaign are dedicated to Phase I of the Westfair Master Plan, which focuses on upgrading to modern, multi-purpose facilities. Key elements include:
- New Education & Expo Building: State-of-the-art facilities designed for year-round use, including 4-H and FFA exhibitions, regional livestock shows, and community events.
- Regional Economic Driver: Establishing Westfair as a premier destination for agricultural tourism and regional gatherings in Southwest Iowa.
- Enhanced Safety and Accessibility: Modernized electrical, plumbing, and accessibility upgrades to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for visitors and exhibitors.
To fully unlock the $2 million from the Iowa West Foundation, all matching gifts must be committed by September 2026. Campaign leaders encourage those who have been waiting for the “right time” to give to act now while their contribution can do twice the work.
