Now is the Perfect Time for Photos of Art in Council Bluffs

November 12, 2018

Iowa is breathtaking in the fall and Council Bluffs is no exception. The colorful foliage and breathtaking sunsets also make for stunning backdrops in photographs of public art. But don’t just take my word for it. Here are several shots from other Instagram accounts:

And last but not least this stunning photograph of the Gateway at sunset posted on the “You Might Be From Council Bluffs Facebook page:

If you’re a resident, there’s a chance you’ve walked or driven past some of the large-scale public art pieces a thousand times. But do you really know what they’re called? Can you name the artists who designed them? Even if you don’t understand a piece, have you at least wondered what inspired the artist to create it?

Earlier this year the Iowa West Foundation, in partnership with the Council Bluffs Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, launched an app to help with that. It’s called OTOCAST and it’s absolutely FREE to download. Look for this icon in the app store.

One of the bonuses of the app is that it can be used beyond Council Bluffs, and you can discover public art across Iowa from Des Moines to Dubuque, throughout the country (Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, New York & San Diego to name a few) and even explore art in Italy! Yes, that Italy.

The Council Bluffs audio guide features nine separate entries, with the addition of more historic pieces coming soon. When you click on an entry, here’s what you can expect:

  • A short audio clip of the artist talking about the piece
  • GPS mapping on how to get there
  • Materials it’s constructed from
  • Artist’s bio and website
  • Professional photos with unique angles in multiple lighting settings
  • Links to order a free poster with free shipping from the Iowa West Public Art collection
  • Videos from the construction process

So whether you’re out walking around the River’s Edge, the Mid-America Center, downtown Council Bluffs or driving over a bridge or under the Interstate, see if you can capture the beauty of public art for yourself. Don’t forget to use these hashtags:

Happy snapping!
